Gap Night is a catalytic prayer event where a group of young adults from across Pretoria gather for a night of Prayer. It was founded in 2014 by a national youth director of Doxa Deo Church Johan Terblanche.
The problems that South Africa is going through now, weather economic, social or even political are far by without a shadow of doubt caused by Immorality. South Africa has a highest level of inequality with Gini Coefficient of 0.85 which further causes cultural tension and brings further division amongst different races. With these statics, Andy Mahlagaume; the president of Accendo Ministries was convicted to start a prayer movement to rally the youth to pray for the nation of South Africa. Andy further discovered about Gap Night and met with Johan Terblanche which Accendo Ministries further collaborated with the young adults to pray for the nation of South Africa.
On the 3rd of May 2019 Gap night had a prayer at the Union Buildings Pretoria. The prayer was strategically held before the elections that was taking place on the 8th of May 2019. The purpose of the prayer was to pray for peaceful elections in the country and for God to choose leaders after his own heart that will lead this country with integrity.
The education system was one of the prayer points at the prayer event. God has designed the educational sphere to be a means of discipleship and multiplication. The purpose of discipleship is the transformation of the student rather than the mere transaction of Knowledge. With this perspective education becomes a means of developing a Biblical Christians who have Jesus as their model and the bible as their foundation. With this a generation of good leaders will be developed with good morel, integrity and go-given purpose for their future and for their country. We believe the next generation is the future for this country.
Praying for family was also one of our prayer points. We believe that a dysfunction family leads to a dysfunctional country. God is the one who had the original idea of family. He instituted marriage at the very beginning of creation (Genesis 2:24) as the life-time commitment between one man and one woman. When the original couple expanded into the family with the birth of their first child we are told that it was “with the Lords help” (Genesis 4:1). His purpose for this sphere is that life might be multiplied and that a God-given destiny for every individual might be established. God wants us to engage with families, to serve and strengthen them, to see his purposes of life and destiny restored in them in order to serve the emerging generation.
Apartheid was a system of institutionalised racial segregation that exisited in South Africa. Even thou APartheid system ended early 19900s, culminating with the formation of a democratic South African government in 1994, the country is still struggling to come together and unite for the course of building this nation. We believe it is through forgiveness, love and working together that the problems of this country will come to an end. For kingdom that is divided against itself cannot stand. It is through collaboration that this nation will be saved.
We also prayed for morality, economics and government. What transpired at gap night prayer event was unprecedented. Youth from different races came together and put their differences aside, united in love to pray for this nation was amazing.
